Date of Birth : 18th March 1930
School Attended : Ananda College – Colombo

Graduated at University of Peradeniya as a Economics (Sociology) graduates.

Post held :    He held the post of Librarian at Colombo Technical College in 1957 at school of co – operation of Polgolla in 1958. Thereafter (1958) he went for his postgraduate studies at the Moscow University, Russia, but had to come back due to ill-health. Then after a short period as a teacher, he joined the Dept. of Agrarian Services in 1959 and was sent in charge of Kalutara District as it’s Asst. Commissioner to start a branch of the Department. Next, I was transferred to Matara district and finally sended up in Colombo.

  • In 1968 he was appointed as Asst. Director Land Development Department and was in charge of polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura districts.

  • In 1969 he was appointed as Asst. Secretary to the Cabinet of Ministers.

  • In 1971 he became the Deputy Commissioner of Agrarian Services and in 1973 became the Commissioner of Agrarian Services. Along with this post he held the position of Director, Rural Institutions and Productivity laws. Concept of Agrarian Service Centre was initiated during this period.

  • In 1977 he was posted as Senior Asst. Secretary to the Ministry of Plantation Industries.

  • In 1979 he went as Project Manager system ‘C’ Giranduru Kotte under the Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka.

  • In 1981 he was appointed as an Institutional Expert under the FAO / UNDP (Ins/78/012) Programme and he took leave from the Government Service to proceed to Indonesia and worked there till 1983.

  • In 1983 he came back to Sri Lanka and was appointed to the post of Additional secretary to the Mahaweli Ministry.

  • In addition to this post he served as the Chairman, River Valleys Development Board and as the Chairman of the Mahaweli Centre.

  • Mr. Weerawardena retired from the Sri Lanka Administrative Service in 1987 Since then he has held a number of posts in development projects which is as follows.

  • 1987 to 1989 as Institutional Specialist UNDP project in land settlement.

  • He worked as an Institutional Specialist of the National Irrigation Rehabilitation Project (NIRP) funded by the world bank.

  • 2000 to 2001 as Land Specialist in Southern Transport Development Project (TA Sri ADB3184)

  • 2001 he served as the Team Leader (WBP Project 97/016) on Sustainable Management of Land Resources in Sri Lanka.

  • 2002 to 2004 as Senior Researcher for Land Titling and related services (world bank project InfoTech / Ideas) for the following reports.

  1. Rural baseline study
  2. Urban baseline study
  3. Feasibility, Guarantee and cost recovery
  4. Tambuttegama baseline study

  • 2004 – 2005 he served as Resettlement Specialist in the RDA, to prepare a Resettlement Implementation plan of the outer highway.

  • 2005 – 2006 he was appointed as the Chairman, Presidential Commission to report problems relating to Viharagama and Dewalagama lands.

  • 2006 – 2009 served as the Chairman, Disciplinary Board of the National Police Commission.

  • From 1998 to 2010 he was a Member of the Appeals Panel of the Inland Revenue Department.
